You have to drag yourself to the office each day, and while youre there, youre not even working, just refreshing Facebook every five minutes. If youre being honest, youve outgrown your role, but youre not ready to throw in the towel and move on just yet.Job searches take a lot of time and effort, and- especially if you once loved your position or have close relationships with your team- you may be torn as far as whether you should try to make it work or look elsewhere.Well, the answer depends on whats causing your boredom, because once you know where it stems from, youll also be able to clearly see what your next move is. Heres what I meanStay if Youre CoastingThe truth is, you could do your work in half the time- and with your eyes closed. If the assignments that used to challenge you now seem like rote errands, then youre sleep-workin g. You can still be happy at your job. What needs to change is the kinds of projects youre working on- and thats something you can talk to your boss (and co-workers) about.Next StepSet up a meeting with your manager to explore how you can take on challenging new projects. Say, Id love to pursue opportunities for growth within my role. Im only a beginner at skill and becoming more proficient would help me with aspect of your job. So, I like to work on projects that require me to practice it, such as If you come with concrete ideas, youre making it easier for your supervisor to say yes.Another way to find out career-boosting opportunities in your day i s to offer to help your co-workers. Tell them how much flexibility you have in your schedule and your interest in joining new teams. Go if Youre Out of SyncOnce upon a time, you were bubbling with ideas. You were able to excite people around you and ultimately get results.Now- not so much. Youre not excited about going to the office because your ideas are constantly shut down, your suggestions are never taken, and youre frequently asked to redo things. Its just not clicking- but that doesnt mean your only option is to get comfortable coping with feeling frustrated each day.Priorities mayve shifted for your manager, team, department, organization, or industry, and you may no longer be the right fit (or your role may no longer be right for the company). If you and your team are on different pages, it can be best for everyone involved for you to seek out an opportunity thats more suitable for you in this stage.Next StepWhile everyone has some small things they may not like about their job, successful people know better than staying in a role or at a company thats no longer good for them. When you accepted your current job, you felt you were making a smart decision. In that moment, you clearly saw how the position could elevate your career. Now you see something else a new path.Your best bet once youve come to this realization is to start actively looking for a new opportunity. To make sure you dont end up in the same situation again, dont apply only to roles youre qualified for. Consider those thatll take you out of your comfort zone and encourage you to master new things. No one wants to be bored at work every day- and no one should have to be. Do what you can to make your job grow with you, but if that isnt possible, dont feel bad about looking for a job that excites you.

In this step, you will collect all the information that you have related to your graphic designer resume skills, work experience, internships, education, awards and recognition, and extra-curricular activities. The idea is to dump all the information in a single place. Maybe months or years later, say if you want to switch profiles again or apply for a job, youd have a single authoritative source containing everything youve ever done. When you will proceed further in the graphic design resume making process, you will know that you have all your information compiled at a single place and you dont have to look at any other documents to customize and finalize your graphic designer resume.Master Graphic Designer Resume In the master graphic design resume making stage, you will sort and arrange your professional experience section and your internship section. At this stage, make sure you have the following information and that it is arranged and placed at their proper places.Look for the following information for both the sectionsCompany namedrehortDates of joining and resigning or completion of tenureDesignationPoints arranged in terms of importance for every sectionLastly, save a copy of the master graphic designer resume. By doing so, you will be able to customize your resume later according to every job description that you apply for.First Draft for your Graphic Designer Resume In the first draft, you will work on other sections including your name, personal information, title, education, awards and recognition, extracurric ular activities, additional information, etc.Sort and arrange information in these sections by writing the most recent information first (reverse chronological resume format). For instance, mention your current/last-held profile, then the profile before that, and so on.Hiration Pro-tip Doing this will ensure that you follow the reverse-chronological format for your graphic design resume, which is the most conventional and recruiter-friendly resume format out there.By this stage, three-fourth of your graphic design resume will be complete.Final Graphic Designer Resume All that is left at this stage are 3 thingsFirst, write your graphic designer resume skills section.Scan your entire professional experience section and compare it against the job description of your choice. From these two things, you will pick up all the relevant key skills that you possibly can, while making sure theyre relevant and validated in your professional experience section.Secondly, write your summary/objectiv e section.Look for points in your professional experience section that highlight your contribution to the organization.Pick information from those points and write them in your summary section mentioning how you can use your graphic designer resume skills to benefit the organization.Hiration Pro-tip Go for a professional summary section if youve more than 2-3 years of relevant experience. Choose a graphic design resume objective section if youre an entry-level professional.Thirdly, bold all the important words/phrases achievements in your professional experience, internship, awards and recognition, and extracurricular activities sections. Now let us look into how to write each section in detail.Writing Graphic Designer Resume HeaderSo, now you must be wonderingWhat exactly is a header in a graphic design resume?A header is the first thing that you write in your graphic designer resume. It is basically made up of your name. And now youre wondering what is so special about it?Well, it differs from your graphic design resume to other graphic design resumes that are posted or sent for the same profile. Also, it prevents your graphic design resume from getting misunderstood as someone elses graphic designer resume. The header is supposed to be the largest text in your entire graphic design resume. It must be written between the font size of 16-20 points. Correct spacing in the names is of utmost importance.A single space needs to be given between your first name and your surname. Improper spacing errors, like that of no space or double space, gives out the impression of you being careless when it comes to important things. If you have a middle name, then the correct way to write it is Robyn R. Fenty. Only the initial of your middle name will be written and a full-stop after that initial will be given.Give a single space after the full-stop and then write your surname. Also, refrain from writing nicknames in your graphic designer resume. Youre not Robyn Hurricane Fent y. Youre just Robyn R. Fenty. If you decide on making your graphic design resume on your own, then refer to the example given below to get a better idea of how a perfect header should look like.On the other hand, you can instead use Hirations Online Resume Builder to get that perfect graphic designer resume header, as our resume builder uses fixed font size in accordance with latest hiring trends.Personal Information Section in your Graphic Design ResumeThe second section in the graphic design resume comprises your personal information. Your personal phone number, professional e-mail ID and the current location of residence comes in this section.Personal Phone NumberWrite your personal phone number on which you are 24x7 available. In case you have more than one phone number, then do not include both the phone numbers in your graphic designer resume. Write only that number which you use primarily. Mentioning two (or more) numbers unnecessarily creates confusion. Also, there is a certain manner in which you need to write your phone number. You just cant go and simply scribble down your number in your graphic design resume. The number will be written on the left-hand side of the graphic designer resume, just below the graphic design resume header. Now, there are two things to remember when writing your phone numberFirst, write the International Subscriber Dialing (ISD) code of the country where you live in and add a plus sign (+) before it. After this, give a single space and write your mobile number. Then give a single space after the first five digits of your personal mobile number.Write only that phone number which you use personally, so that if the recruiter contacts you, you are available to pick his/her call.Personal E-mail IDE-mail ID is the second thing to be written in the personal information section. If you have multiple e-mail IDs, then choose the one that you use frequently or on a daily basis and write that one in the personal information section. It will be written right next to the phone number, in the center. E-mail ID names like sexysusyxyz.com are considered very unprofessional. So, ensure that your e-mail ID looks professional and is ideal for putting into a graphic designer resume. For example rihannaxyz.com is a professional looking e-mail ID.Also, you can provide a hyperlink of various social media sites, like that of Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. if you think they are relevant to your target profile and will showcase your ability as a graphic designer. Before adding these links to your graphic design resume, ensure that these sites are in sync with each other in terms of information. They need to be up-to-date with respect to your professional history, especially LinkedIn.Hiration Protip Its not imperative to include your LinkedIn profile or other online portfolios. But if you do, make sure the information is consistent across all these platforms. In addition to this, you can also provide hyperlinks to any of your pers onal websites or portfolios that support the work that you have done so far.Writing the e-mail address is of critical importance as it is one of the ways through which the recruiter might contact you for the interview after seeing your graphic designer resume.Current drehortYour current location is the third thing that you will write in your personal information section. It will be written right next to your e-mail ID, on the right-hand side.In your location, you will write your current location. In case you live in some other city, far from your home city, then also, you will mention the city in which you are living and not the city which is your home town. You will write your city name first and then your country pin code followed by a comma after the city name. There is no need to write the whole address, as it is of no use to the recruiter. Only the city name followed by the country code will give the recruiter the idea whether you will have to change the city or relocate if you ch oose to work with that company.Take a glance at the graphic designer resume sample below to get a better understanding of how to write the personal information section. You can also choose to make your graphic designer resume at Hirations Online Resume Builder wherein you get the option to change the icons in the personal information section in order to make your graphic design resume look more attractive. Our Online Resume Builder has the following optionsYou can put the icon of WhatsApp if the number you have is your WhatsApp number and the icon of a phone if it is just a normal phone number. You also get the option to put icons of various social media platforms to put in front of the e-mail address or the social media hyperlink that you provide. So, make your graphic designer resume on Hirations Online Resume Builder todayCustomizing Graphic Designer Resume Profile TitleThe third thing that goes into your graphic design resume is a profile title.Adding a profile title is crucial as i t helps the recruiter to know for which profile youre applying for. When it comes to telling the recruiter how able you are to do your work, thats when the profile title comes in. It helps the recruiter to understand how able you are at the workings of your field and what is the level of the same. For example Graphic Design Lead, Creative Director, Art Director, etc.It is supposed to be the second largest text in your graphic designer resume and should be of the font size 14-16 points.Take a glimpse of the graphic designer example given below to get greater clarity on how to write the profile title.Weve seen countless resumes without a job title. The recruiter should not have to scan your professional experience section to gauge your profile or your relevance. The idea behind mentioning the job title is to give a quick snapshot of your role so that the recruiter can decide in an instant if your resume is worth reading or not.Remember, each and every element in your resume should make t he recruiters job easier. You can also opt for a review of your graphic design resume done by professionals at Hiration, to get your overall graphic designer resume and especially the title better optimized by them.Graphic Design Resume Professional Experience SectionFor a graphic design resume, the professional experience section is the most important section of the graphic designer resume. It demonstrates the overall work experience that one has as a graphic designer. Also, this is the section that gives a deeper insight of your ability of graphic designing to the recruiter. In this section, we will tell you how you need to write your work experience so that it will leave an impact on the recruiter. For people with a lot of work experience as a graphic designer, this section is of prime importance.Use the following format to write your professional work experience section. Location (city, country pin) (month year)Leadership Design Project ManagementSpearheading the Design team of 10+ to steer design, development implementation of the revamped graphic layoutSupervising procurement of production communication materials for clients to achieve reduction in costs by 12%Managing up to 5 projects simultaneously as part of developing appropriate designs based on overall marketing goalsBudgeting Client ServicingEnsuring quality accuracy of design by administering the assessment of all graphic materialsGoverning ensuring the efficient use of production project budgets worth up to USD 25,000Designing developing marketing programs including Ads Infographic Presentations to meet client expectationsThis is an example of bucketing. Lets say youve written 8-10 points under your work profile. Those points will still look like a wall of text unless theyre presented in a way which would make it easier for the recruiter to go through.Clubbing similar points together and grouping them under a relevant skill is an excellent way to showcase your expertise before the recr uiter.Lets say a Graphic Design Leads role majorly involves leading a team, coordinating with the Sales/Marketing department, directing fulfillment of all deliverables, etc.You can simply mention a few points under each of these major functions and assign them under relevant subheadings like Team Leadership, Stakeholder Management, Delivery Fulfillment, etc.Have a brief look at the graphic designer resume sample below to get more clarity on how to include all the information in your work experience section.Graphic Designer Resume for FresherNow, you might be wonderingWhat about a fresher in the field of graphic designing with no work experience?Worry not, were here to rescue the graphic design resumes of freshers as well. Include figures around revenue, number of employees, geographic presence, etc. to convince the recruiter that you were working in a reputed organization.Write all the locations and dates on the right hand side of the resume. It is the industry standard and recruiters look for them in the same manner. Again, make sure you write the dates in (mm/yy-mm/yy) format.Align your job title and company names on the left throughout your professional experience section.Across your entire resume, start all your points with a power verb. Power verbs leave a bette r impact on the recruiter. Also, use power verbs only if they make sense and refrain from using the same power verbs too many times.Make sure, all the points in your present profile are in present tense and those in past profile are in past tense.Mention where ever you led or managed a team and mention the number of people you led or managed.Ensure your points arent redundant and reflect your contribution in your past engagements. Redundant points leave a negative impact on the recruiter. Your points should reflect three things (a) Your contribution, (b) Effect/Impact and (c) Corresponding Achievement.Your points should not exceed more than one line. If they do, split them into two points or multiple sub-points. It will help you leave out fluff and will force you to only write your contribution and its impact. One way to get the recruiters attention is to quantify your contribution. For example, mention how many clients, how many digital illustrations, how many stakeholders, and how content was delivered to them.Highlight all the important words and numbers throughout your resume, except for the summary/objective section. This method will help you pass the 6-seconds test. On an average, a recruiter scans your resume just for 6 seconds. By highlighting/bolding relevant points, you can directly make the recruiter read what you want them to read.mucksmuschenstill got more concerns around your graphic design resume? Thought-Controlled Robot Arm

Thought-Controlled Robot Arm Thought-Controlled Robot Arm Thought-Controlled Robot ArmThe servile robots of the future will be controlled elend with joysticks, smart phones, or voice commands, but with thoughts. Already, mind-controlled robots have allowed a paralyzed man to feel again through a robotic hand, and a quadriplegic woman to use a robotic arm to bestattungs a bottle and drink. But both of these cases required a chip to be implanted in the brain of the robot controller, a costly and sensitive procedure, to say the least. Now theres a way to make robots obedient to thoughts without the requirement of brain surgery.Instead of a chip implant, the new method uses and EEG cap to measure brain waves. Its non-invasive, theres no risk, and its cheap, says Bin He, a biomedical engineering professor at the University of Minnesota, who lead the research. With the cap strapped on their heads, 13 human volunteers were able to make an off-the-shelf robotic arm grab an object, move it to a shelf, and, finally, release it.His subjects were all healthy, able-bodied students with full use of their limbs. So the signal they needed to generate was not the same as simply willing their actual arms and hands to move and grip as they normally would. Instead, He directed them to imagine they were performing these tasks without actually doing it. Previous work by He showed that imagining a movement and actually performing it are not that different, at least from the point of view of fMRI scans and the EEG cap. What is the difference, or the similarity, between imagining youre moving compared to actually moving? We found a very nice co-localization in terms of activity between fMRI findings and EEG imaging findings in both movement imagination and actual movement.Research subjects fitted with a specialized noninvasive brain cap were able to move the robotic arm by imagining moving their own arms. Image University of MinnesotaBut eager robot masters will need to do more than ju st slap on the cap and put their imagination to use. It does require a relatively lengthy training process, says He. Subjects go to Hes lab once a week, for two hour sessions. It takes 10 to 15 such sessions before a subject has mastered the technique. For some subjects we ask them to execute the actual movement, to help them get a feel for how they should imagine moving. Usually we ask them to move an arm and then not to move it, but to imagine how you moved it before, he says. Were teaching them the skill of motor imagination. Once theyve got a feel for that kind of imagining, they try to move a cursor on a screen form left to right. Then they graduate to grasping, releasing, and moving the arm, in a step-by-step process. The subjects arent the only ones who are learning. The software adapts to them as well, learning the peculiarities of how each subject imagines movement.Hes next step is to train amputees. Will the signal they generate be similar to that of Hes able-limbed subject s so far? He thinks theyll be similar. But we need to work out the details. The applications for non-invasive mind-controlled robots is vast. Those without the full use of their arms will be glad to have a new one at their disposal, to be sure, but there are many other people who stand to benefit. Imagine having an extra arm for playing the piano, piloting a plane, or performing any task where both flesh-and-blood arms are busy. But before applications functional or futuresque become a reality theres much work to be done. He wants to improve the control resolution as well as shorten the training periods. But however the technology is eventually adapted and adopted, the first major achievement has been made. Its the first time, to our knowledge, that its been demonstrated that a human subject can perform sophisticated 3D control using EEG signals.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Usually we ask them move an arm and then not to move it, but to imagine how you moved it before. Were teaching them the skill of motor imagination.Prof. Bin He, University of Minnesota

Careers in Law and Science

Careers in Law and ScienceCareers in Law and ScienceIncreased interest in biotechnology, the pervasiveness of biotechnology products in daily life, and escalating numbers of patent filings and intellectual property (IP) infringement cases, has caused a high demand for lawyers with scientific/ technology backgrounds. For anyone considering alternative careers in biotechnology, the marriage of ansicht two disciplines in a course of study can almost guarantee employment after graduation. In a recent interview with the University of Guelph Alumni magazine Portico, patent lawyer Maria Granovsky described her first employer in the legal field, law firm Sterne Kessler, Goldstein Fox (Washington, DC), as keen to have associates who could argue the fine points of science. So keen, in fact, that they paid her tuition to attend law school. The Marriage of Law and Science Job opportunities, for individuals with both legal and scientific backgrounds, include work as a technical specialist (s cience degree) or associate (both degrees), dealing in IP cases such as patent, copyright and trademark disputes. The cases might be opened on behalf of clients already holding rights to a product or copyright, that have reason to claim those rights have been infringed by another party. Other times, clients might require protection from a lawsuit filed by another party whose patent claim, they feel, is invalid. Many complications in establishing IP ownership can arise nowadays because of the sheer volume of patent claims being made and difficulty on the part of both researchers and regulating bodies, in keeping track of the specifics of (and ensuring the uniqueness of) each invention. An invention that has already been previously described in the literature, or something that has been on the market for years, cannot be patented, yet the filing party, or patent office, might not be aware of the pre-existing product. Thats when the lawyers are called in to examine the facts, decipher the legal jargon, establish precedence, and defend their cases in court. According to Granovsky, law firms are having a hard time finding individuals with a solid understanding of the technology behind many of these high-tech cases. Committee on Science, Technology, and Law The National Academy of Sciences has recognized the convergence of these two very different disciplines by forming a Committee on Science, Technology and Law, to explore, discuss, and establish policies on five major areas Science in Litigation, Federal Information Policy/ Access to Research Data, Science and National Security, Intellectual Property Rights and Protection of Human Participants in Environmental Research. According to the Academy, much of the dicke bretter bohren mssen with legal cases surrounding technology issuesis the key difference between how these two traditional disciplines have evolved. The practice of Law is based on facts and finite findings in an effort to resolve issues that might no t have definitive answers according to science. Science, traditionally, is a discipline of sharing information, and an open-ended search for expanded understanding, whose truths are always subject to revision. Expanding commercialism and the need to recover biotechnology investments and research funding through profits, has lead to the invasion of the scientific domain by legal issues surrounding IP, access to research data and conflicts of interest. Although science may have done without lawyers in the past, there are now many important bioethics issues that must be dealt with in areas of environmental science, biotechnology, genetics, and medical research. Success in either discipline depends on an ability to go fact-finding gathering information and processing it in an orderly fashion. Both require a high amount of logic and attention to detail. Therefore, strengths in one area are easily applied to the other. A combined Science/Law degree provides essential tools for many other career options such as consulting, corporate management and other areas of technology. Its not all glamor and courtroom heroics, though. Like any job, much of the routine involves attending meetings, seeing clients, research, and reading, writing letters and reviewing contracts and other documents, but the job description is ideal for those interested in studying science but looking for a career outside the laboratory.

4 Signs Your Resume Isnt Ready to Be Submitted

4 Signs Your Resume Isnt Ready to Be Submitted 4 Signs Your Resume Isnt Ready to Be Submitted 3You’ve found it- the perfect job. You’re immediately overcome with a sense of urgency. You need to submit your materials before the application period closes or there’s way too much competition ahead of you in the pipeline. You’re ready to hit that “submit” button and cross your fingers that you hear something in response. But wait! First, you need to slow down and make sure that your resume is equally as perfect as that job. Four signs your resume isn’t ready to be submitted: 1. You haven’t proofread it yet. Here’s a pop quiz: how many mistakes or typos is your resume allowed to have? If you guessed “zero,” you’re correct. This means you need to invest a significant amount of time in proofreading your resume. Make sure to double-check areas that frequently get missed, like confirming that your employment dates are correct or changing verbs to past tense for any jobs you’re no longer working. When you’ve finished making those tweaks, read your resume backwards (from the bottom up) to force yourself to pay close attention to each and every line. You can even enlist the help of a few friends to read through your document and catch any errors that might slip right by you. 2. You haven’t compared it with the job description. The goal of your resume is to prove that you’re a relevant fit for the exact job you’re applying for, and there’s no way that one generic resume can do that for every single position. Before submitting your materials, take a fine-tooth comb to the job description and pull out any key skills or terms that are emphasized. Provided that you honestly possess those qualifications, those should be included on your own document. Not only does it draw these parallels and illustrate that you meet the qualifications, but injecting those terms will also help get you past any applicant tracking systems (ATS) the employer might have in place. 3. You haven’t tried the “six-second test.” Statistics say that recruiters spend only an average of six seconds looking at your resume before deciding whether or not to move forward with an interview. Pause and count to six right now. That’s hardly any time at all, right? In order to make an impact in this amount of time, your resume not only needs to be polished, properly formatted, and visually appealing, but it also needs to be skimmable so that the hiring manager can understand your highlights immediately. Are you calling attention to your most impressive skills at the top of your “key skills” section? Are your most relevant responsibilities listed right underneath your previous job titles? Challenge yourself to look at your own resume for only six seconds (set a timer!) and notice what things catch your attention. Don’t be afraid to move things around and try some changes so that you can make the absolute most of that short amount of time. 4. You haven’t double-checked the directions. Employers might have certain requirements for your resume. For example, perhaps they only accept PDFs or they want you to use a specific file name. Turn your attention to the application instructions one more time and ensure that you’ve followed all of them (yes, every single one of them) exactly. Failing to pay attention to those types of directions will get your resume tossed into the recycling bin without so much as a second look. When you’re excited to apply for a job, it’s tempting to send off your resume as quickly as you can. But that rapid-fire approach means you might actually apply with a document that only sabotages your chances of landing an interview. Keep an eye out for these four signs that your resume isn’t quite ready to be submitted, and then take a little more time to review and make some changes. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did. Should you take an adult spring break this year

Should you take an adult spring break this year Should you take an adult spring break this year Around this time each year, college students plan their escapes to sun-drenched regions with beachy views, plentiful brews, and bikinis for days.Spring break is actually a time-honored rite of passage that according to an article in Time a few years back, had its origins as far back as ancient Greek and Roman celebrations of the spring, the season of renewal. The ancient festivals were much like the modern ones honoring Dionysus or Bacchus - the Greek and Roman gods of wine.If you’ve fallen into a beginning of the year slump, maybe getting away for a short time is exactly what you need. Publicist Andrea Pass believes that “to effectively and successfully grow in your career, it is important to also enjoy your personal life.” On the fun level, she said: “Whether you take a cruise to the Caribbean, visit an all-inclusive resort in Cancun, hike  in National Parks or tour Europe or the Far East, you’ll be creating lasting memories that allow balance in your life.”But believe it or not, your fun few days away can have professional benefits as well. Pass said that having an interesting experience means “you’ll have a conversation piece to share with clients and other business associates.”Still not sure if an adult spring break is right for you? Emily Brockway, co-founder, and CMO of travel company Noken which launched in November 2018 believes that vacations are an invaluable way to broaden your horizons both professionally and personally. So, don’t think of it as playing hooky, your grown-up spring break could allow you to:1. Build resiliency“Being in an unknown environment and encountering a setback can challenge and stretch you in new ways,” said Brockway. “Traveling and putting myself in uncomfortable situations has been perhaps one of the best preparers for my entrepreneurial and personal journey thus far since travel requires you to be flexible and think on your feet in unfamiliar settings.“Overcoming challenges while traveling has g iven me the confidence that I can handle any variety of problems that I face in the office with a level of calm and confidence.”Spring break idea: Try heading to someplace new and challenging that will take you completely out of your everyday mindset. Movement coach and MovNat founder Erwan Le Corre runs a series of immersive natural movement courses in Tulum, Mexico. They’re rumored to be a bit grueling at times, but also remind you of the joy of running and sprinting and jumping and remembering the pure joy of being a kid. Can’t make it to a retreat? Le Corre’s new book The Practice of Natural Movement is a gorgeous and comprehensive compendium that retrains you in the most basic skill set: walking, running, balancing, jumping, crawling, climbing, swimming, lifting, carrying, throwing, catching, and self-defense.2. Rest your brain and boost your creativity“For the highest achieving, most creative individuals, resting your brain has long been the best stimulus for creativ ity and idea generation,” said Brockway. “Sometimes it is necessary to step away and take a break in order to produce fresh, new ideas. This definitely proved to be true for my fellow Noken co-founder, Marc Escapa, who formulated the idea for Noken while traveling in Iceland.”Spring break idea: Travel and expand your skill set. The Visionary Projects creates immersive artistic workshops and events nationally and internationally. I’m dreaming about taking this one with artist Amanda Oleander in Miami Beach.3. Build cultural competency and be a better manager“More so than ever, companies are becoming more global and diverse,” Brockway said. The result is that “this increased diversity leads to wildly better and more creative business outcomes but creates a more complicated team structure that must be actively managed and nurtured. By traveling abroad and experiencing new cultures and ways of life, people equip themselves to better manage and lead diverse teams today.”S pring break idea: If your company has offices around the world (or even in a different state) consider visiting that area for a while. Immerse yourself in the culture and meet your counterparts. Sure, it’s theoretically a vacation, but it also allows you to do a better job.Ready to go? Pass says you should plan each day so that you aren’t tempted to log on or stare are your cell phone. “There’s nothing wrong with checking emails periodically, but breathe, experience, and try to get off the grid. You’ll be back at your job, raring to go after taking a break.”

Retail trade, professional and business services, and financial activities were among the industries contributing to last month’s gains. The BLS also released revised job numbers for 2016, reporting that 85,000 more positions were created than previously reported. This brings the total number of jobs added last year to 2,242,000, or about 187,000 per month. That compares to about 226,000 per month, on average, in 2015. In January, the national unemployment rate moved up slightly, to 4.8 percent, from 4.7 percent in December. The rate has been at or below 5.0 percent for 17 consecutive months. The unemployment rate for college-degreed workers who are 25 or older was unchanged from the previous month: 2.5 percent. According to the latest figures from the BLS, the unemployment rates many professional-level roles were also well below the national average in the fourth quarter of 2016: Financial analysts: 1.0% Accountants and auditors: 1.3% Database administrators: 1.6% Software developers: 1.9% Paralegals and legal assistants: 2.2% Secretaries and administrative assistants: 3.2% Designers: 3.5% At the same time, many jobs in the United States are waiting to be filled. The most recent Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey from the BLS shows that more than 5.5 million jobs were open in November - essentially unchanged from October.

Amazon.coms Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)

Amazon.com's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Amazon.com's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Youve considered the reasons why you should or shouldnt self-publish, and have decided to give self-publishing a try. Then youve reviewed the editorial, packaging and sales considerations, and decided to publish an e-book. If you like the idea of your self-published e-book being available for the online retail giant, Amazon.coms, Kindle device, then Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) may be an e-book self-publishing service to consider.? About Amazon.com's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Kindle Direct Publishing offers e-book-only publishing, a format popular with authors such as genre novelists (for Amazon.coms paperback publishing services, see CreateSpace). While of course you should thoroughly review all the features and contractual points before signing up for any self-publishing service, here are some of Kindle Direct Publishings highlights. KDPs Editorial Design Services - Kindle Direct Publishing doesnt offer editorial services per se (though those services are available for a fee from KDPs Amazon sister company CreateSpace). In order to format the file for your e-book, KDP does offer a compact booklet (both in Kindle and PDF form) that provides detailed technical specifications for publishing your e-book successfully on the KDP platform.KDP Book Package - Kindle Direct Publishing offers e-book only format and, as stated above, gives parameters and instructions for the technical specifications for formatting the file. In addition to the instructions for the file format, Amazon.com strongly suggests that the book have a compelling cover image, though for those books that dont have an image, the service will fill in with a simple placeholder. Book Cost/Pricing - There are no upfront charges to self-publish on KDP. The author chooses his or her own list price; Amazon.com offers options for 35 percent author royalties and 70 percent author royalties. Each option comes with its own set of parameters. KDP allows the author to switch royalty options, if desired, but its advisable to review the options carefully before choosing the first time.Amazon.coms Kindle Direct Publishing Book Distribution - The Kindle Store provides KDP-published authors with a distribution channel. Amazon Kindle owners can purchase KDP content on the Kindle Store site and download it for reading on the Amazon Kindle wireless e-reading device. Readers who do not own an Amazon Kindle are also able to read KDP content on their PCs or Macs by using Kindle for PC/Mac software; or read KDP content on their mobile phones or PDAs with the Kindle app. Kindle Direct Publishing Book Publicity and Marketing - When an author publishes through KDP, it is included in Amazons merchandising algorithms. While its not explicit how a quickly a new book will be entered into the clickstream (presumably it has to do with topic, sales movement, etc), online merchandising may include the book jacket and description appearing when a customer is viewing another books page, under such cross-promotional areas as More Items to Consider, Customers with Similar Searches Purchased, and Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought. Promotional programs also may include customer sampling. Kindle Direct Publishings Proprietary Advantages - In addition to the obvious distribution potential of Amazon.coms retail site, those who publish with Kindle Direct Publishing, are offered the opportunity for additional advantages, such as added royalties, through a feature called KDP Select.By enrolling in Amazon.coms KDP Select, authors make their book accessible to the Kindle Owners Lending Library (a readers service whereby Kindle/Amazon Advantage users borrow books for free). Each month, Amazon sets aside a pool of funds and KDP Select authors share in them, according to the number of times their books are borrowed. An authors share of the Kindle Owners Lending Library Fund is calculated based on a share of the total number of qualified borrows of all participating KDP titles. For example, if the monthly fund amount is $500,000, the total qualified borrows of all participating KDP titles is 100,000. If a book was borrowed 1,500 times during that period, the books author will ear n 1.5 percent (1,500/100,000 1.5%), or $7,500 for that month. Those who have already published to KDP can also enroll with KDP Select. Visit the Kindle Direct Publishing website. If youve self-published your own book, feel free to submit a review of Kindle Direct Publishing or any other self-publishing service.

The Quick and Dirty Guide to Defining Your Personal Brand

The Quick and Dirty Guide to Defining Your Personal Brand The Quick and Dirty Guide to Defining Your Personal Brand Youve heard about  personal branding  and know you need a personal brand â€" but do you really know what  a brand is  or how to define it? In the old days, it was called making a name for yourself. Oh, the printer isnt working? Call Bob â€" he can fix anything.  Bob clearly made a name for himself around the office as the go-to-guy  when it came to  fixing things no one else dared touch. That was his brand. He didnt have to promote it.  Word simply  spread around the office in the same way that things go viral today. But youre not Bob, and you do need to clearly define your brand before it gets defined for you. To do that, youll want to answer the following questions: (Note:  Come up with at least five answers for each question. Of those five answers, pick the top 1-3 and see what commonalities there are between them. You should start to see your story coming together.) 1. What do you do better than anyone else?  Ex: I have a personable style of communication that I get complimented on all the time. 2. What are your unique talents?  Ex: Building relationships. 3. What do you really take pleasure in doing?  Ex: Being part of conversations about things that matter. 4. What are the results of you doing what you do?  Ex: Our social media audience is growing and engaging with our brand online. Being able to clearly and honestly answer these four questions will help you hone in on what your brand is. Think of it this way: When youre asked what you do for work, you can respond with your title or with your  tagline. Your tagline is basically the end result of the work you do, and its much more meaningful than a title. For example, if your title is social media manger or brand marketing manager at a consumer goods company, your tagline might be: I create strong bonds between consumers and the products they use in their daily lives by engaging online audiences in conversations about things that matter most in their lives. Another way to consider your personal brand is to ask yourself what value you deliver, how you deliver it, and to whom you deliver it. Now that you know what a personal brand is, make sure youre clearly communicating it on your social networks and on your resume! Consistency is critical in delivering the powerful message that is uniquely yours. A version of this article originally appeared on the  Atrium Staffing blog. Marie Kondo and Elizabeth Gilbert share their morning routines

Marie Kondo and Elizabeth Gilbert share their morning routines Marie Kondo and Elizabeth Gilbert share their morning routines It was an unlikely meeting of minds.Marie Kondo, tidying-up queen and author extraordinaire, interviewed Elizabeth Gilbert on her KonMari website. “Eat, Pray, Love” â€" a story of personal and literal journey â€" has sold 10 million copies since 2016 and became a movie starring Julia Roberts. Turns out, Gilbert has many things in common with Kondo when it comes to working and living and deciding what ultimately matters in life.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! One of the first things Kondo asked Gilbert about her morning routine, of course. Gilbert replied:“The first thing I do is open the blinds to bring in the light. I always say hello to the morning. I’d be willing to bet that the first prayer that the first conscious human ever spoke was to say hello to the morning â€" the miracle that the light went away, and now it’s back! It’s a clean slate.”Kondo related that she did a similar thing:“I open the window and welcome fresh air into my house â€" and then I burn incense. I also pray and give thanks for my daily life.”Kondo and Gilbert are alike in many ways, the interview revealed. They both move often â€" Kondo said the longest she and her husband had lived in one house was a year and a half. Gilbert is a fan of the “spark job” concept. But the similarities run much deeper than that. Both women have dedicated their life’s work to deciding through brutal honesty what really matters in life, in order to make room for true happiness. While Kondo approaches that objective by taking a literal inventory of physical objects and deciding what must stay or go, Gilbert’s approach is more spiritual. Still, the two seem built from the same DNA when it comes to helping others finding what is true is life, and discarding what overwhelms us.

Personal Branding is Out. Reputation Building is In.

Personal Branding is Out. Reputation Building is In. Personal Branding is Out. Reputation Building is In. Personal branding has become a hot topic over the last few years. Seems everyone has one, or wants one, or feels as though they should have one, even if theyre not sure what it is. Ill be honest, Ive long been a naysayer when it comes to personal branding. But today I came across this post by Harry Urschel called The Reality of Personal Branding and it helped clarify my thinking on the issue. Harry says this about personal branding: It’s a trendy way to think of “Reputation” â€" Your reputation has always been critical in your career as in your life. People get to know you and make judgments… are you honest, competent, inept, trendy, old-fashioned, high-maintenance, easy-going, a blowhard, humble, an expert in your field or industry, foolish, a techie, a technological troglodyte, a hard worker, reliable, loyal, political, or any number of other traits? All of these traits and more form an impression in people’s minds about you… thus establishing a “Brand”. 7-UP is the Un-Cola… just as Bob Smith might be the Go-To Guy for any PC problems in his neighborhood. Both have a Brand. Don’t get caught up in trendy language. I personally don’t care for the “Brand” label. However, your Reputation can precede you into any meeting or new introduction. Build your Reputation carefully! I totally agree but I go further. For me the notion of personal branding is a real problem. I know many talented and well-meaning people who work as personal branding coaches and I know they add value to their clients lives in many cases, but I think they also do unwitting damage on a larger scale. I see three main problems with the personal branding trend. Personal branding encourages us to think about ourselves too much If you think about developing a brand, you are thinking about how you should package and present yourself. If you think about developing a reputation, youre thinking about how you should act. To me thats a vial distinction. One is inward-looking and self-centered, the other is outward-facing and more likely to be focused on the needs of others. No one seriously believes they can build a reputation for something without putting any work in, but I think many people see developing a personal brand as an exercise in packaging. We are not products, we are people. We are highly complex, highly contradictory beings and the idea that we can summarize ourselves in one or two personal brand sentences is nonsense. There are aspects of my life where I am very confident and take charge of situations (for example, when working with a client on his resume), and there are other aspects of my life where I am much less sure and act completely differently (when taking classes in a subject I find challenging for example). I am happy to have a reputation as a creative resume writer, author and industry thought leader. But I do not want that to be my personal brand because I dont want to be pigeon-holed and defined as just that. In this era of social media and web transparency, I simply dont believe anyone should present themselves as though they were as simple and easy-to-understand as a packet of soap powder. Personal branding can mess with our decision-making I think having a personal brand can lead to inauthentic behavior when the branded person is faced with the need to take action. A client recently told me that he turned down an interesting promotion because he didnt feel it aligned with his personal brand. He had been unhappy at work for some time and the promotion would have taken him in a new career direction. While it intrigued him, he felt that all the work he had been doing to build his brand would be lost when he made that sideways move. But he wasnt happy! That makes no sense. Personal branding is too open to misinterpretation I know that well-meaning, talented personal branding coaches would say that my client misunderstood what personal branding was all about, and that he should have gone for the opportunity if it excited him. Thats always the defense when criticisms like this are raised. Personal branding advocates say that person just didnt understand and if he had worked with a certified coach he would have been fine. But thats my point. Most people never work with a certified coach. They simply read about personal branding online or in a book, and then try to apply those principles in their own lives. But personal branding is a concept that is way too open to misunderstanding and misinterpretation. Its much less catchy and much less commercially viable to talk about building a strong reputation in your industry, field or area of expertise, but in the end I think its where we in the careers field need to be taking the discussion. With many of our comments, thoughts and ideas documented online forever (and apparently reviewed by the government!) none of us can avoid thinking about the reputation we build both on-and offline. For me the unnecessary straight-jacket of personal branding just makes it much harder to do this while remaining true to the authentic, complex, contradictory, fascinating beings that we all are. But this is just my opinion on a touchy subject. Id love to know yours, whether you agree or disagree.
